What dance emerges from the meeting between Merce Cunningham, fandangos and viras? What music can a band improvise with the sound of drones, conjurations and chickens?
Choreographer Filipa Francisco has fallen in love with traditional dances in Palestine and since 2011 has created shows with more than thirty folk dance groups in Portugal, Wales and Brazil. This book tells the story of this journey and reflects on how cultural diversity and democracy are reinforced in this act of giving and receiving. The book includes QR codes for a selection of the best moments of the soundtrack created by António-Pedro, recreated by different musicians in each performance.
The book is bilingual in Portuguese/English and has texts by Filipa Francisco; presidents of the folk-dance groups from Torredeita, Corredoura and Arganil, namely: José Pereira, Henrique Macedo and Graça Moniz; António-Pedro, composer and co-creator of the show; as well ethnomusicologist Domingos Morais, cultural programmer Elisabete Paiva, and teacher, researcher and dance critic Daniel Tércio.
The album is a double vinyl LP, recorded over ten years with elements of fifteen groups in various locations in Portugal, Wales and Brazil. It’s an important sound archive that rests on the union between traditional and contemporary.
Book and album can be purchased together or separately.
The book includes QR Codes to access all songs.
This edition is supported by Dgartes and is dedicated to the Palestinian people and to Palestine, the country where the journey began.
