"De Vidro e Mar" fuses art and memory, reflecting the identity of Marinha Grande through dance, music and video. Starting at the Morais Matias factory, it unfolds in a route leading up to Teatro Stephens.
With its premiere scheduled for April 12th and 13th at 5 pm, “De Vidro e Mar” is a co-production of Mundo em Reboliço and the Municipality of Marinha Grande with artistic direction by Filipa Francisco.
“De Vidro e Mar” began as an artistic residency held in 2024 by Mundo em Reboliço in Marinha Grande, to investigate the region's stories and work with local associations. Given the wealth of material found, the creative team led by Filipa Francisco proposed the development of this project to the municipality and created this show.
Oriented by Filipa Francisco, Marta Coutinho and Ricardo Freitas, the process took place over several months and went through different stages: an initial research for text and images; a second field research with visits, meetings and interviews with people related to the glass industry and the history of Marinha Grande, followed by a call for community participation and practical workshops to establish a dialogue between the research and the bodies of the participants. Then came the score: how does this embodied research results in a dramaturgy with a beginning, middle and end. And finally, the rehearsals.
“De Vidro e Mar” is the result of these encounters between different experiences and knowledge, in a show that delves into the history of Marinha Grande, involving the community and local collectives. In addition to individual participants, it also features Banda Filarmónica Recreativa Amieirinhense, conducted by Élio Frois; Tocándar (Tocándar Sênior – Kotándar) with musical direction by Paulo Tojeira; Coro da Tertúlia dos Anos de Ouro, conducted by maestro Carlos Ferreira; and students from the Dance Course of Escola de Artes e Movimento do Sport Operário Marinhense, directed by teachers Joana Santos and Diana Sábio.
These meetings resulted in multiple narratives, individual and collective stories with glass as their central theme, where politics and society intersect. Starting from the territory and summoning memories, “De Vidro e Mar” seeks to poetically tell the stories of Marinha Grande, reflecting on the present and exploring perspectives for the future.
The show brings together different creative areas, such as dance, video and music, proposing a strol from the old Morais Matias factory in a walk/demonstration to Auditório da Resinagem and Teatro Stephens. In the end we will serve a “glassmaker’s soup” that can purchase for a symbolic amount — the proceeds will go to Confraria da Sopa do Vidreiro*.
