The Journey questions the way popular manifestations adhere to and seek modernity, giving rise to new meanings and allowing new appropriations and new understanding of their role today.
The desire to work with traditional dance groups was born on a journey. In the spring of 2009, at the invitation of the Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival, Filipa Francisco is introduced to the traditional and contemporary dance company El-Funoun.
“When traveling with the group through Palestine, watching their performances in small villages, I realized the power of traditional dance. These dances raise contemporary issues like entity, gender and freedom. For those young people the act of dancing was actually a cry of freedom, a way to break free from the harsh memories of war”.
Out of this experience came the awareness that traditional dances are not fatality stuck to the fringes of modernity (nor does modernization involve the cancellation of traditions). As a current practice it obeys rules and combines other social practices and processes. It’s in this sense that the current project gains particular relevance.
Traditional dances are present in the collective imagination as an expression of regional folk traditions, associated with folk art. They have a relevant and unquestionable importance regarding the culture of peoples, for the richness they contain in the field of customs and traditions, transmitted from generation to generation through songs, movement and garments.
Confronting this living heritage with music and contemporary dance, Filipa Francisco deepens her reflections on the social and political function of art, once again shifting her artistic work to spaces and languages that increase the possibilities of meeting with the audience.
In each location where this project is presented, Filipa researches the local folk dances. Because this is a work of creation, but also of affection, sensitivity and mutual discovery, a time of paused creation is essential to allow an effective dialogue and understanding of the plurality of orientations and practices.
